Tics
What Are Tic Disorders?
Tic disorders are neurological conditions characterized by sudden, repetitive, nonrhythmic movements or sounds called tics. Tics can consist of motor tics (such as eye blinking, hand stretching, or head jerking), vocal tics (such as throat clearing or sniffing), or both. Think of tics as involuntary muscle movements or vocal sounds that occur suddenly and repeatedly. These can range from mild to severe and can significantly impact a child's daily life and emotional well-being. Tics tend to start between 4 and 6 years old and worsen between the ages of 9 to 12 years old. Symptoms tend to decline as youth reach adulthood. Dr. Lisa is a child psychologist that specializes in providing comprehensive and compassionate treatment for children and families experiencing tics.
When to Seek Help from a Child Psychologist:

- Increasing frequency or complexity of tics
- Child is experiencing emotional distress associated with their tics
- Tics are impacting academic performance or their social life
- Child is bothered by their tics and wants help with treating them
- Child finds their tics painful or bothersome
Dr. Lisa’s Approach to Tic Disorder Treatment
Cognitive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is a structured, evidence-based behavioural treatment designed to help children manage and reduce their tic symptoms. Developed through extensive research, CBIT is a proactive, empowering approach that gives children practical tools to help manage their tics and lessen their impact.
CBIT involves: awareness training (helping child become more aware of their tic patterns), competing response training (teaching the child to use alternative movements to block the tic), and making life style changes and learning coping skills (e.g., relaxation training) to reduce the likelihood of tics being triggered. CBIT is most effective for children 9 years and older, and for children who are highly motivated and engaged in treatment. Parental support is also highly important in treatment success.
